Hey, I'm Chris Horvidell and this is Yesterday in Sports. The show that gets you caught up on the biggest things that happened yesterday, why they mattered, and what you need to know before pretending you watched every second of it. Here we go. Welcome to Yesterday in Sports, I'm Chris Horvidell. Thursday made Mo Salah's move to Turkey official, gave two WNBA striking upsets and produced another record-setting running back agreement. Real Madrid also completed a potentially historic transfer and the NBA's investigation into Kawhi Leonard has a new allegation to examine. We'll begin with Mo Salah officially joining Trazensport. The 34-year-old signed a two-year contract worth 17 million euro per season. Trazensport has announced performance bonuses and a 20% share of merchandise revenue involving Salah's name. He arrives on a free transfer after scoring 257 goals in 442 Liverpool appearances and winning two Premier League titles and a Champions League. Trazensport finished third in Turkey and will enter the Europa League playoff round. Salah immediately becomes his primary scorer, largest commercial attraction, and centerpiece of an effort to compete beyond Turkey. For the league itself, it's one of the most significant signings because Salah remains an internationally recognizable player rather than simply a famous name arriving without an obvious role. Real Madrid also completed an enormous addition signing 19-year-old Ivory Coast winger Jan Diamande from RP Leipzig through June 2030. The clubs didn't disclose the fee but reports place it at roughly 125 million euro plus another 10 million to 15 million in bonuses. Reaching that maximum would make Diamande the most expensive signing in Real Madrid history. He produced 12 goals and 9 assists in the Bundesliga last year. His speed and direct attacking style give Jose Mourinho another option on either wing. Real also extended Vinicius Jr. through 2032. The 26-year-old has 128 goals and 100 assists for the club. Securing him while adding Diamande gives Madrid two explosive wide forwards at very different points in their career. In Thursday's Europa League action, Benfica routed Hearts 6-1. Lucky Rebel had Benfica at minus 1200 before the match and the Portuguese club scored after only 3 minutes before building a 4-0 advantage. In the League's Cup, New York City beat Santos Laguna 2-0, Cruz Azul defeated Philadelphia 1-0, Chicago beat Nacoxa 2-0, and Austin shut out Tijuana 2-0. Club America beat San Diego 3-1 while Portland defeated Puebla 5-2. In the WNBA, Chelsea Gray hit a tying three-pointer at the end of regulation and another at the overtime buzzer as Las Vegas beat Indiana 86-84. Asia Wilson finished with 26 points and 13 rebounds. Jackie Young added 22 points and 9 assists while Gray had 11 and 7 assists. Indiana led by 20 during the second quarter but 21 turnovers left Las Vegas enough possessions to recover. Kaitlyn Clark had 20 points and 8 assists but also committed 8 turnovers. Lucky Rebel made Las Vegas the slight pre-game underdog at minus 105 with Indiana at minus 115. The result was nearly as close as the market suggested. The 170 combined points also stayed well below the Lucky Rebel pre-game total of 192.5. Las Vegas improved to 22-9 and Lucky Rebel lists the Aces at plus 450 to win the championship behind Minnesota at minus 105. The Aces still have stretches where their offense becomes too dependent on difficult shots but Thursday showed why their late game experience remains unusually valuable. Minnesota's 10-game winning streak ended with an 89-82 loss to Los Angeles. Ray Burrell scored 17 points for the Sparks who closed the game with considerably more defensive energy. This was a major upset. Lucky Rebel had Los Angeles at plus 750 and getting 15 points before the game. The Sparks outright won by 7. Portland ended a 5-game losing streak by beating Toronto 97-83. Karla Leite produced 27 points and 11 assists while Emily Angsfler added 16 points and 4 blocks. Lucky Rebel had Portland favored at minus 150. The Fire built their lead as high as 27 before Toronto made the final margin more respectable. The New York Liberty also waived former All-Star Beniza Laney Hamilton and gave French guard Maureen Fautou a multi-year contract. Laney Hamilton is 32 and helped New York win the 2024 championship but she averaged only 4.7 points this season and has been a healthy scratch for 8 consecutive games. Fautou is 25 and gives the Liberty another younger developmental guard who has already worked into the rotation this season. In the NFL, Detroit reached an agreement with Jameer Gibbs on a 3-year extension with a base value of $67.5 million, $51.5 million guaranteed and a maximum value of $75.75 million. Gibbs is 24 and has accumulated 5,029 yards from scrimmage with 49 touchdowns across his first 49 games. The new money average of $22.5 million matches B. John Robinson's record figure while the maximum value would make Gibbs the league's highest paid running back. The agreement ends his hold-in and keeps one of Detroit's most important offensive players under team control through his prime. Gibbs isn't simply a traditional runner. His receiving ability allows Detroit to change formations without changing personnel, which is why the Lions were willing to invest at a position that often is treated carefully by teams. In hockey, Pittsburgh re-signed restricted free agent Ville Koivunen for eight years and $32 million. Koivunen's 23 and recorded 7 points in 39 NHL games, plus 41 points across 34 American Hockey League appearances. The $4 million annual value is a bet on future production. Pittsburgh gains cost certainty while Koivunen receives long-term security before establishing himself as a full-time top six forward. In baseball, Boston overcame five separate deficits and beat the White Sox 12-11 in 13 innings. The Marlins' walk-off single gave the Red Sox their eighth consecutive victory and their 31st win in 36 games. The Cubs beat Toronto 3-2 in 11 innings after Alex Bregman tied the game with a two-run homer in the ninth. Atlanta extended its winning streak to eight by beating the Marlins 11-3. Minnesota defeated Kansas City 4-3, the Angels beat Baltimore 4-1, and Cincinnati completed a sweep of the athletics with a 6-5 victory. The Mets rooted Cleveland 13-6, Milwaukee beats Pittsburgh 5-2, Philadelphia defeated Washington 7-3, and Detroit shut out Seattle 11-0. San Diego beat Arizona 5-1. We have a developing NBA investigation to watch and this includes another reported payment involving Kawhi Leonard. The podcast Pablo Torrey Finds Out reported that Leonard held an undisclosed multi-million dollar sponsorship agreement with Daktronics. The company that constructed the video board inside the Clippers' arena. The show is suggesting this is yet another instance of salary cap manipulation by the Clippers and Leonard. The NBA was already examining allegations involving a separate $28 million dollar agreement with the bankrupt company Aspiration. Neither the league nor the Clippers had responded to the latest report by Thursday night. Toronto has agreed in principle to acquire Leonard but that transaction remains incomplete and the league has warned the Raptors that they would assume the risk of any punishment affecting him. That makes this investigation a competitive issue as well as a salary cap question. Finally, Bo Hosler shot a 9-under 61 to take the clubhouse lead during the weather-interrupted opening round at the Wyndham Championship. Ben James finished one stroke behind. In the Thursday morning snapshot, Lucky Rebel listed Hosler as plus 1,400 to win the tournament. The 61 changed the shape of the event, although part of the field still had holes remaining when play was suspended. When the day includes overtime, more Kawhi Leonard drama, extra innings and weather delays, dinner can be part of the evening that stays predictable. That's why we love Factor so much.
